Click on the following link to see substantial new security initiative changes to driver's license requiring you to bring various additional documents to process your drivers license or state ID card. The state will be requiring documents that you have never presented before while obtaining a driver license, permit, or state ID.  In particular you will need TWO PROOFS OF PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE, I.E. proofs of your address.  Acceptable proofs are at the second link below.

If a person is under 21 years of age and does not have approved address verification documents, they may provide two of the parents address verification documents.   The address on the documents must agree with where the child actually lives and with the address on the license.

Effective November 2, 2001, taxpayers may take care of any drivers' license/state ID transaction in any county in the State of Nebraska. Issuance/address changes/name changes/renewals/CDLs (Commercial Drivers License) can now be done anywhere. You NO longer have to return to your county of residence. However, you should be aware that some of the smaller counties only have State of Nebraska Examiners available on specific days and therefore you should check with the county ahead of time.  Sarpy, Lancaster, and Douglas counties all have examiners available Monday throught Friday. Click to see the hours of the location nearest you:  State examiner hours and locations

Payment options:  We are able to accept cash or check.  No form of plastic is accepted. Fees vary greatly based on the type of license. Regular IDs and driver's licenses cost $26.50, CDL's are $57.50, non commercial duplicates are $14.00 and non commercial name or address changes are $13.50.  For a more specific breakdown visit the state web site at License, Permit, and State ID Card Costs

Online Renewals or Duplicates.  You may be able to renew your license or obtain a duplicate online. The key factor is that nothing can be changed.  It will be sent to the address of record and will not be forwarded if the address has changed.  Please proceed to this link if you would like to try it online:  ONLINE DRIVER'S LICENSE RENEWAL/DUPLICATE

Renewing your license:

Make sure and bring two proofs of your address when you come to renew or change address.

Non CDL transactions such as duplicates, address changes, and name changes usually do not require a visit to the examiner unless you are trying to renew. To view the Sarpy County Treasurer's hours for Non CDL(commercial driver's license) duplicates, address changes and/or name changes select this link:  Treasurer's Office Hours

You may renew your expiring Nebraska license within 90 days (not three months) prior to the expiration date. For renewals, it is recommended that you be here by 3:30 PM at the latest. If you are approaching your 21st birthday, you may complete the paperwork for renewing your license within 60 days of your birthday, however, you can not have the actual permanent license mailed to you until 10 days prior to your birthday. You can receive your temporary paper license early but it will not be effective until 10 days prior to your birthday.

The heaviest congestion in the offices is usually the periods immediately after release from school and Fridays in particular. If it is convenient for you, first thing in the morning or early morning is the least congested.

New Nebraska Resident:

If you are new to the state of Nebraska you should get a new Nebraska license within 30 days.  Normally, you will not have to take a test but that determination will be made by the state examiners.

Address changes:

If you move to a new address, you should update your Nebraska license within 60 days. Please bring two proofs of your new address or else we cannot change your address.

Name changes:

In order to change a name on a driver's license you need to provide a certified copy of the document changing changing the name.  This would be a certified marriage license, signed and dated divorce decree, or signed and dated court order.  Divorce decree or court order must state that your name has changed.  If your address also changed, please bring two proofs of your new address.

Military Renewal

If you are active duty military, please review the eligibility rules for a MILITARY RENEWAL,  please download the Application for Revision Operator's License/Permit/ID Card and follow the instructions contained under the military renewal link.

Out-of-State Renewal

Nebraska licensed drivers that are out of the state during their renewal period, may apply for renewal, prior to expiration or within 1 year after expiration of their operators license by mail. You cannot renew a Commercial Driver's License by mail, you must renew this license in person. Contact the state examining main office for details at 402-471-3861.

A Packet of information will be sent to you by the State of Nebraska DMV. Upon thorough completion of the forms and return to the DMV they will issue a license without a picture. Since this process takes at least 3 to 4 weeks, individuals should apply in sufficient time to ensure license issuance prior to expiration. Further information can be obtained at the State link below.  You can view the application form at:  OUT OF STATE RENEWAL FORM

OUT-OF-STATE DUPLICATE - DIGITIZED LICENSE

If you lost your digitized Nebraska license (and are out of state for an extended period), we can issue you a NON commercial DUPLICATE license via the mail in most cases.  Please call the Sarpy Treasurers' office at 402-593-2192 or select instructions for a duplicate and  Application for Revision of an Operators License, Permit, or ID Card Form and print the application for revision form.  Fill it out completely and have it notarized.  Submit it and $13.50 to:

SARPY COUNTY TREASURER
DRIVERS' LICENSE DEPT

PAPILLION, NE  68046

OUT-OF-STATE DUPLICATE OLD STYLE LICENSE (If you think you have one of these it has expired and cannot be duplicated).

Generally any license issued after July of 2003 will be digitized and would have expired in July 2008 at the latest.

Please call us at 402-593-2192 to verify whether you have a digitized license if you are not sure.

Please note that if you did NOT have the new digitized license you probably lost an expired license which cannot be duplicated.   The only exception is if you active duty military and you have been stationed outside of Nebraska. If this applies to you, please follow the instructions under military renewal.

We retain the right to request additional identification if required. Please make sure you give us contact information and where the license should be mailed.
