October 1, 1999Hazardous MaterialsAccident Response Exercise |
On Friday, October 1 the Sarpy County Local Emergency Planning
Committee sponsored an exercise testing a new decontamination capability at Midlands
Community Hospital.
Military and civilian moulage artists made up or "moulaged" the
"victims" at Midlands Community Hospital. Moulage includes a variety of
procedures for making up participants of exercises so that they look like they have real
injuries. Realistic injuries increase the effectiveness of community disaster drills and
exercises.
Military and civilian responders assessed the severity of injuries and transported the
wounded to area hospitals. A contaminated victim arrived at the hospital, simulating what
would happen if "walking wounded" patients brought chemical contamination to the
hospital. Hospital personnel identified and decontaminated this patient before they
spread the contamination to the Emergency Room.
Patients were triaged again at the hospital and assistance was simulated. After the
exercise, a debriefing allowed participants to exchange feedback . Plans and training
calendars will reflect exercise feedback.
The Sarpy County LEPC wishes to thanks all of the exercise participants for a job well done!
