Animals in Disaster - Prepare Now! |
Animal issues are people issues.
Even the smallest disasters have the potential to involve animals. Animals can cause people to delay their evacuation, increasing the potential for injury and death among pet owners, animals and responders.
About 60% of US households have one or more pets. Pets are often considered full family members. When disaster strikes, your pets must be part of your disaster plan. Failure to plan for your pets during emergencies can lead to :
Risk of injury and injury to residents and emergency responders
More labor-intensive relief efforts
Stress, anxiety, grief and depression
