Sarpy County is located on the eastern border of Nebraska along the western bank of the Missouri River. It is comprised of 236 square miles of rich agricultural land and a rapidly growing urban population. Sarpy County is a unique county in that it is surrounded on three sides by water. The western and southern boundaries are formed by the Platte River. The eastern border is formed by the Missouri River. The highest elevations occur near 225th Street and Giles Road where peaks reach 1,300 feet. The lowest elevation point is where the Platte and Missouri Rivers join on the southeastern corner of the county, at just under 960 feet.
Sarpy County is comprised of primarily agricultural land with a 1990 Census total population of 102,583. According to July 1, 1994 Census estimates, Sarpy County had a population of 109,204 people. Approximately 48% resided in rural areas and 52% in urban areas. The City of Bellevue is a first class city with a population of 41,274 (37.8%) including recently annexed areas. Bellevue focuses on industry, business, local government, and Offutt AFB, which is located south of Bellevue and serves as headquarters of the US Strategic Command. The City of Gretna is a second class city with a population of 2,303 (2.1%) and is primarily an agricultural city. The City of LaVista is a first class city with a population of 10,634 (9.7%) and focuses on industry and business. The City of Papillion is a first class city with a population of 10,817 (9.9%) and focuses on business and industry. The City of Springfield is a second class city with a population of 1,473 (1.3%) and is primarily a rural community. Chalco, with a 1990 estimated population of 7,337, is currently unincorporated but has the characteristics of an urban city and could incorporate. Therefore, the remaining 39.2% of Sarpy County residents live in unincorporated and rural areas of the county. The median household income for residents of Sarpy County, based on 1990 Census estimates, is $35,575.
Sarpy County is served by three railroads: Union Pacific, Amtrak, and Burlington Northern. Highway bus service is available through Greyhound Bus Lines. Primary transportation routes within the county are I-80 (east to west), US Highway 6 (east to west), US Highway 73-75 (north to south), State Highway 50 (north to south) and State Highway 370 (east to west). A major truck stop, Sapp Brothers, is located north of the junction of I-80 and Highway 50. The Missouri River, which forms the eastern boundary, is navigable for over eight months during an average year, based on flows.
A large portion of Sarpy County in and around the cities of Bellevue, Papillion, LaVista, Springfield and Gretna are industrial in nature. PCS Nitrogen, Wilson Concrete Company, and Pendelton Woolen Mills are all located near Bellevue. K & M Agri Supply, Skelgas, and Midlands Community Hospital are located in Papillion. US Cold Storage and Consolidated Freightways are located west of LaVista. Farmers Union Co-op and Kerstens & Lee Incorporated are located in Gretna. Ready Mixed Concrete is located north of Springfield.
Midlands Hospital is a 208-bed facility. Ehrling Berquist Hospital, a 55-bed facility, is also located in Sarpy County.
