History - Rating: Low

There have been no earthquakes reported in Sarpy County during the last 100 years. However, several epicenters have been recorded in counties near Sarpy County.

Vulnerability - Rating: High

Due to the fact that a majority of Sarpy County residents are near a probable earthquake zone, the state is becoming more vulnerable to the primary and secondary effects of earthquakes. Depending on the size, location, and the effects of the earthquake, various emergency actions may be required. In urban locations, the effects may be magnified.

Maximum Threat - Rating: High

A worst case scenario would be an earthquake with an epicentral intensity of MM VII. The worst possible center would be in the eastern third of Sarpy County. This area is the most densely populated and contains many underground utility lines.

Probability - Rating: Low

No occurrences have been recorded in Sarpy County. Sarpy County lies in Zone 1 and Zone 2 of the 1972 Seismic Risk Map, indicating possible epicentral intensities up to MM VII. Sarpy County is near the Humboldt Fault on the Nemaha Anticline and the Thurman-Wilson Fault, which runs from Des Moines, IA towards Lincoln, NE.

General Comments:

Primary effects of an earthquake include ground fissures, vibrations, and the resonant movement of buildings. Secondary effects include landslides, fires, floods, utility service outages, property loss, injury, and loss of life.
