History - Rating: High
Sarpy County has a large number of industries using and storing hazardous chemicals. Four businesses have or use nuclear material. Midlands Community Hospital uses nuclear medicine in its care and rehabilitation of patients. Arcadian Fertilizer stores large quantities of anhydrous ammonia and chlorine. DPC Industries stores a large quantity of chlorine. There have been several minor incidents involving the storage of hazardous materials.
Vulnerability - Rating: High
Continued increase in population and industrial growth contribute to increased vulnerability to the risk of death or injury to people if a hazardous material storage incident occurred. Most industrial cities in the county are in remote areas and the vulnerability of property would be lower.
Maximum Threat - Rating: High
A worst case scenario would be a chlorine leak from Arcadian Fertilizer or DPC, combined with a weak wind from the south or southwest, respectively. The City of Bellevue lies north of Arcadian and northeast of DPC.
Probability - Rating: Low
Although Sarpy County has witnessed several hazardous materials storage incidents, there have been few serious incidents. New technology, governmental regulations, and safety features governing storage and handling of hazardous material decrease the probability of a serious hazardous material storage incident in Sarpy County.
