Reception of Evacuees

 

The hosting of large numbers of evacuees from another community or area due to a major disaster or relocation.

History - Rating: High

Several flooding events have occurred requiring the evacuation of different areas of Sarpy County. The evacuations have historically been of short duration, with residents returning to their homes within a few days.

Vulnerability - Rating: Medium

The City of Bellevue is a reception area in the event of a nuclear power plant incident at Fort Calhoun. In addition, Bellevue also receives evacuees in the event of flooding along the Missouri and Platte River.

Maximum Threat - Rating: Medium

The worst case scenario would be a major nuclear power plant incident and a flood occurring along the Missouri and Platte rivers simultaneously.

Probability - Rating: Medium

Sarpy County has lowland flooding along the Missouri and Platte rivers an average of three times every five years. The severity of the flooding is not always extreme enough to require evacuation.

General Comments:

Primary effects of evacuation include food and clothing shortages and transportation problems. Secondary effects include health hazards and overcrowding.
