Tornado

A violent, destructive, rotating column of air taking the shape of a funnel-shaped cloud that progresses in a narrow, erratic path. Rotating wind speeds can exceed 200 miles per hour (mph). Path widths range from a few yards to over a mile. Tornadoes can remain stationary, but usually travel at average speeds of 25 mph. Tornadoes have attained speeds of 68 mph.

History - Rating: High

Numerous tornado sightings occur in Sarpy County every year. A tornado touches down on an average of once every two years. Tornadoes of disastrous strength may strike only once every 20 years.

Vulnerability - Rating: High

Sarpy County is situated in an area considered highly susceptible to tornadoes. Increasing population only increases vulnerability to death, injury and property damage.

Maximum Threat - Rating: High

The worst threat would be a very strong tornado, touching down early during a weekday afternoon, when schools and businesses are occupied. The tornado could disrupt transportation and utilities over a large area.

Probability - Rating: High

According to the National Weather Service, a tornado touches down in Sarpy County every two years.
