Sarpy County Debris Removal Announcement
Papillion, NE Sarpy County and city officials from Bellevue, Gretna, LaVista, Papillion and Springfield met this morning to discuss plans to deal with the aftermath of yesterday's blizzard. County officials reported that the removal of obstructions from roadways to enable response by emergency vehicles had been completed except for a short stretch along Camp Gifford Road. Work is underway in that area today.
County officials submitted a disaster declaration with the State of Nebraska effective October 26, 1997. This will enable potential funding reimbursement from state and federal sources.
Officials expressed concerns for citizen safety during the upcoming process of debris removal. Many trees remain fragile with the possibility of sudden collapse. Many remain in dangerous proximity to power lines. Citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution and not attempt removal in those instances where a potential threat exists. Experienced tree removal specialists should be consulted in these cases.
Discussion revealed that approaches to debris removal will vary based on unique requirements and resources of each city. Some will offer curbside pickup while others will not. In all instances, drop-off sites have been designated for citizen and contractor use. Additional sites may be required and will be determined if necessary. At present the sites are as follows:
County officials said that fees would be waived for Sarpy County private citizens bringing tree debris to the land fill, however, regular fees will be charged to commercial haulers.
County and city officials declared that this is a time for volunteerism and cooperative community effort. Citizens are reminded to call 9-1-1 only in cases of emergency. City administrative offices or SID Board members should be contacted with questions concerning debris removal.
