Position Title:                     Registered Nurse - Part-Time

 Nature of Work:  Position will provide nursing care according to standing orders/procedures, physician orders and professional judgment.  Performs survey of all new inmates booked into the jail; conducts medical histories and physical assessment of inmates; collects laboratory specimens (e.g. venipuncture and urine samples); provides health teaching, guidance and counseling; confirms medication orders; and obtains, prepares, and passes medications as directed by Physician.  Records relevant data completely and concisely, and maintains regular contact with Unit Physician regarding inmates’ condition and needs.  Attends monthly unit meetings and participates in the further development of unit program as inmate needs are identified.  See job descriptions for further details.

Minimum Experience and Training:  Applicant must be a Registered Nurse with current licensure from the State of Nebraska.  Must have a current Basic Life Support Certification.  Experience in a critical care nursing area desirable.

Location and Hours of Work:  Sarpy County Law Enforcement Center, 1208 Golden Gate Drive, Papillion, NE.  Part-time - 24 hours per week.  Days and hours to vary. 

Supervision:  This position works under the supervision of the Nursing Supervisor and Physician.

Starting Wages:  $22.03 - $27.31 per hour, DOE.

GENERAL PURPOSE  
Performs a variety of skilled duties to provide care for the Jail population.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Nurse Coordinator.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs survey of all booking medical histories and physical assessments of high-risk inmates.

Collects laboratory specimens (e.g. venipuncture, urethral swabs)

Provides health teaching, counseling, and guidance.

Confirms medication orders.

Obtains and dispenses medications as ordered.

Accurately records relevant data.

Maintains contact with Unit Physician regarding inmates’ conditions and needs.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

Attends monthly unit meetings.

Participates in unit development as needs are identified.

Performs other duties as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

(A) Current licensure in Nebraska as a Registered Nurse, and

(B) Current certification in Basic Life Support.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

(A) Ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with other staff members, other departments and general public.

(B) Skill in operation of listed equipment.

(C) Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to handle stressful situations.

(D) Ability to successfully pass a background investigation and polygraph examination.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

 a) POSITION-SPECIFIC: Standard tools and equipment necessary to perform duties of a Register Nurse. 

b) TECHNICAL: Personal computer, including word processing and data software; calculator; printer; copier; scanner; fax machine, multi-line telephone.
