Correctional Facility
The Sarpy County Law Enforcement Center was built in 1989 at a cost of approximately $5.7 million. The County Board authorized the issuance of $9.2 million worth of bonds to finance the project through a lease purchase. The Bond Issue was paid off in 7 1/2 years. The Sarpy County Jail was able to help defray costs of the project by generating revenue for housing prisoners for other jurisdictions, to include US Marshals and Immigrations. Also funds from our house arrest and work release programs. It holds the administrative offices of the Sheriff's Department, as well as the Sarpy County Jail. This jail was the first smoke-free jail in Nebraska, only the third in the country at the time. The jail has a rated capacity for 148 prisoners.
The Sarpy County Jail is a class III facility, which holds both pretrial and sentenced inmates for Sarpy County and federal prisoners for the US Government such as US Immigrations, Federal Bureau of Prisons, US Marshals Service and Federal Parole as well as other jails. The jail has its own kitchen and contracts for food service to provide meals for inmates. The food service contractor also contracts with other jail facilities and prepares all meals at the Sarpy County Jail. Sarpy County is able to generate additional income from the food service contractor for using the jail facility at this location.
Another unique aspect of Sarpy County Jail is the combined indoor/outdoor recreation area. This area was designed so that inmates could have recreation within the secure perimeter of the jail. The recreation area is completely enclosed. The recreation area has a skylight and motorized windows, which provide fresh air in all types of weather. This concept has virtually eliminated all possibilities of escape and introduction of contraband and weapons. Since 1989 many jails in Nebraska and Iowa have utilized this design.
Work Release / House Arrest
In order for an inmate to qualify for work release they must have employment and be sentenced with no outstanding warrants or charges. This gives inmates the opportunity to keep their employment while serving their jail sentence. Inmates pay $70/week to be on the work release program, unless they are serving a child support commitment, in which case they are charged $35/week. The inmate leaves the WRC in the morning and must return to the WRC when their workday is complete. While the inmate is away from the WRC, they have to account for their whereabouts at all times. Random checks are made throughout the day. If an inmate is not following the program and violates, they are returned back to the jail to complete their sentence.
Medical Unit
The Sarpy County Jail has its own highly-trained medical staff. A medical office with examination rooms are within the confines of the correctional facility to administer medical attention to inmates. The jail also contracts with local physicians, counselors, and psychiatrists when necessary to treat prisoners.
